Cash Limits For Thailand

If you plan on moving cash into Thailand there are a few things that should be considered prior to the transaction being completed. It should be noted that your own country may have their own limitations on the amount of money being moved

Cash In Notes & Coins

There is no limit to the amount of money that can be brought into Thailand, however, if the amount of money brought into the Kingdom in notes and coins is over 2 million Thai Baht then you will need to report this to AMLO (Anti-Money Laundering Office). A form will need to be completed and submitted to them. As a result they may instigate an investigation. Details can be found here: Cash Transaction Report

There is also no limit on the amount of Thai currency which can be brought into
Thailand, but only 50,000 baht may be taken out without obtaining a permit. When carrying Thai currency to neighboring countries, e.g., Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, up to 500,000 baht, may be taken out without obtaining a permit. Carrying out an amount of Thai currency which exceeds the above stated limit requires a permit from an authorized bank. The original permit (Thor-Tor 5) must be shown to the Customs officer while passing through the outbound passenger channel.

There is no restriction on both bringing in and carrying out foreign currency.

Property Purchase In Thailand

Any property purchase in Thailand which is over 5 million Thai Baht must be reported to AMLO. As with the cash limits, an investigation by Anti-Money Laundering Office may be instigated. Details can be found here: Asset Transaction Report

Foreign Exchange Transaction Form - Thor Tor 3

If you are purchasing a property or transferring a large sum to a Thai bank account then you should request a Foreign Exchange Transaction Form (Thor Tor Sam in Thai) from your receiving bank in Thailand. If the transfer is for the purchase of property this should be shown on the form. If you transfer more than one amount at a time you should request a Thor Tor 3 for each transaction. If in the future you wish to transfer your funds out of Thailand you will need to produce the original Foreign Exchange Transaction Form/s to show that the funds were legally brought into the country. If this form/s is not shown you may experience difficulties in transferring your money out of Thailand or have to pay tax on the amount being transferred.
